The Absurdity of Pop Culture

Doesn’t it seem like day in and day out that there is something new to adapt to in terms of culture. What needs to be adapted to? Jay-Z’s new line of sneakers? J-Lo’s new perfume? Paris’s pair of Uggs? Young people today are in a sense slaves to their cultural icons. They cannot survive in the “popular” world if they are not properly informed. Think about what a world it would be if people didn’t refer to themselves as pimps - or if girls wore clothes that covered more than what a bathing suit would. What absurdity such conformity is. This goes back to one of my earlier stories, when I talked about how people cannot think for themselves. This is the essence of the problem. Individuality is both the maker and ender of Pop Culture. When someone comes out with a new style, they both revive Pop Culture, and destroy what it once was. These can be called “fads”. Today people laugh at yesterday’s fads, when in fact they actively participated in them when they were “in”. Pop Culture is the swiftest example of evolution. To survive in the cultural world, one must adapt to the changing cultural climate. Now if people chose to think for themselves, and not follow the norm, they would in essence create their own little corner of Pop Culture. This problem is seen throughout the world, not just in our little high school. When people judge other people based upon the popular notions of either a majority or minority, this is the same problem. You should think for yourself, and don’t worry about knowing the next, hottest rap single or pair of boots, because in the greater part of things, what does it really matter?
