The Beverly
Underground Mission
We are starting a new school year,
and it is important that the student body be aware of why we are
here. At Beverly Underground, this is our mission:
We are here for Freedom of Speech:
Beverly Underground is an independent student-run newspaper published to uphold the First Amendment. It is our right to voice our concerns, and our mission is just that. Beverly Underground Newspaper is here to serve the students and provide an uncensored forum for students to make their ideas heard. We strive to provide both accurate and balanced stories that
might be perceived as either positive or negative. We will publish the stories that concern the students,
no matter how controversial the topic. Much of the material we print will be non-mainstream,
non-Highlights material, but that's why we are here. Any student with an opinion can send us an article and be heard. The power of the written word is great and it is our mission to convey the words of the students.
We
are here for Change:
To quote the BHEF mission statement, Beverly Underground also "wants the best school system that can be built - a system of education that is second to no other in the country." We feel Beverly Hills High School has the potential to attain this goal, but there are many problems that first need dealing with. To address those problems is why we are here.
There have been some people who think we are "anti-school". This couldn't be further from the truth. By exposing problems, our mission is to make the school a better place than it already is by hopefully effecting change. Only when problems are addressed can actions be taken to fix them. We hope that our stories will enlighten the students, teachers, and administrators at Beverly of certain problems that concern the students so that there can be change. Our mission is to help Beverly reach its highest potential.
We are
here to get Involved:
Participate. Have school spirit. Get involved. Do something. We all
hear these phrases, but how often can we as students actually make a
difference? How often do we get really excited about the school?
Beverly Underground is here to give the students a voice to bring
about change. We are here to get involved in school policies, school
politics, and undercover what is really happening. We urge you to
join. We are here for you, the readers, and we can only survive with
your support. So get involved. Pick an issue that interests you, and
just go for it. We can only publish with your cooperation. We are
all about school spirit. What better way to show our support
for the school, than to do what matters most: improve the school?
Get involved. Do something. Spark controversy. Enact change. That's
our mission.
We
are here for the Truth:
"You have the right to be informed," that is our subconscious motto.
With every story we print, we think to ourselves, "does this really
matter?" Are the students and teachers going to be more informed, so
that they can make wiser decisions in the future? A newspaper is
designed to inform readers, and we will go to great lengths to
undercover the truth, even when it's covered in ambiguity.
