Reaching
Out
Perhaps
you see the copyright symbol at the bottom of every page. This does
not mean you can't distribute this paper if you would like. We
welcome anyone who wants to distribute Beverly Underground, or
select Beverly Underground stories on your own campus. We have
received emails from various other high school underground websites,
some asking if they can reproduce out material. We don't feel it is
right to own knowledge and people's thoughts. Anyone who
wants to reproduce our stories can, as
long as www.beverlyunderground.org is credited.
If you are running your own underground newspaper and would like to
include some of our stories - we encourage that. Our mission is to
be heard.
We
will come out with a periodical national issue of Beverly
Underground. That is, it will be in pdf format for anyone to print
out and reproduce. Everyone will have complete rights to reproduce
it, modify it (as long as our site is recognized), and distribute it
(see below for distribution tactics). If you feel that your school
can use wisdom from this site, don't hesitate, print out the pdf and
go to Kinko's, Staples, your parent's office, or any other place
where you can make copies (preferably, of course, for free) to make
copies to distribute the paper. Feel free to put your name on as
publisher, for after all, you are the person publishing the paper. The
periodical national edition of Beverly Underground will contain
material that is not specific to any one school, but rather
discusses topics that apply to all high school students.

If
you run an underground newspaper and would like some of your
material published on Beverly Underground, then email us. We are
more than happy to take submissions.
We
encourage all students to get involved and take the proactive. You
have to power to inform and reform. Use it. Use your power of expression: the
very notion this nation was founded on.
It
takes only one quality to make a good underground newspaper:
persistence. Let this site be an inspiration to the students out
there who feel the need to express themselves and issues that
concern them that their school tries to suppress. Let your
determination guide you.

would appreciate it if you emailed us if you are going to use
material on this site, telling us a little bit about where its going
to be used.

How
to Start and Run an Underground Newspaper
I
must warn you: running a good underground newspaper takes quite a bit commitment, but it is worth it. If you are able to do a good job, the students will love it.
The first issue that needs to be addressed is the format of the
paper. You have two basic options: you can (a) publish online, or
(b) print out copies to be distributed. Of course, you can also do
both. At Beverly Underground, we started off solely online, and
then decided to do a "print sampler" leaflet which
features a few stories from each issue. The leaflet also tells
which stories are on the online edition of the paper. The online
format has many advantages, as does an in print edition, and we
decided to capture the good qualities from both. Choosing to
publish online allows for much freedom. By going online, one can
publish articles of any length. When printing, each extra printed
page means a higher cost to print. More articles online, however, doesn't
mean higher printing costs. Additionally, color photos are a possibility
with online publications but become quite expensive when speaking
of an in print underground publication. Another issue that going
online allows for is a wider variety of content. That is, videos,
flash animations, audio files, etc. can supplement the underground
publication. Another quality of publishing online is that one has
more freedom in what the paper contains. Although no underground
newspaper should contain any libel (see the SPLC page on the
do's and don'ts of a newspaper), the school cannot interfere with
a publication and its writers given that it obeys certain
exceptions to the 1st Amendment (see above link to SPLC). When
distributing at school, the rules are a little more stringent. You
have to follow school rules. If school rules declare that all
printed circulars that are to be distributed around campus must be
pre-approved, you have to submit the paper for approval before
distribution. In the state of California, and a few other states
as well (check your state's laws) the administration by law, has
to allow any paper, no matter what its content (as long as it
follows the libel, inciting rebellion, etc. guidelines as seen on
the ACLU page) to be distributed. To go about it legally, you can
appeal an administrator's decision to not allow the paper to be
distributed should he or she decide to do so. Although it may take
some perseverance on your part, legally going about on-campus
distribution will mean the school legally can't do a thing to you.
If you are suspended or punished, you can appeal the punishment to
court. Following the law means the law will be on your side - use
it wisely.
An important aspect of running an underground newspaper,
especially if it's online, is advertising. To do this you will have to be creative. Signs, online advertisement via aim (we compiled a list of over 200 screen names from the school), hack the school
website and direct all traffic to your underground site, get into the school PA system (it can
sometimes be dialed into from any telephone given you acquire the pass-code)
and advertise, hand out little fliers telling people about it, buy a bullhorn and have someone else (the main people who run the paper should not do this) advertise the website during lunch time,
put fliers in people's lockers, replace the flag (if there is one
at the school) with a flag that contains your underground
newspaper's logo and domain name, post your logo on the desktop of
all the school computers, make your underground site the homepage
that loads in the school's computer browsers, etc. Make sure that
you target your advertisements to everyone, not just those that
you know. Advertise across grade levels and to different cliques.
Try to get local media coverage of the paper. If you uncover a big
scandal, your paper could get much notoriety. Contact media
organizations and make your paper be heard. Remember, you are
looking for the largest readership you can get. Just recently
beverlyunderground was featured in the LA Times due to a story we
reported on, you can get your underground paper's name out there
too, its not very hard if you are able to uncover scandal and
report effectively. Word of mouth is powerful; you don't need to
advertise to every single student, if just a few know about it,
word of the paper can spread. If the paper is real good - and it has to start out good, otherwise you may
lose your chance, people will continue to read it.
Just remember, if you do anything illegal or against school rules
(much of the above ideas probably counter school regulations), you better make sure there is no direct evidence that ties it with
you. Cover all the bases, because if your paper gets big, eventually someone will find out who is running it so make sure the school can't legally do anything about it.
The choice to publish anonymously has many advantages but don't
rely on keeping your identity concealed - you have to prepare to
be found out. And if you do not use your real name, then don't
boast about the paper or talk to people about it where others can
hear. If you want to stay anonymous, make sure all contact
information given is untraceable and that other people who only
have very limited information on the inner workings
and the inner circle of writers distribute the paper or take part
in the advertising campaign. Remember your rights and adhere to the law - and if you don't adhere to the law, just make sure there isn't a SPECK of evidence that can be traced back to you.
If you want to keep the inner ring of writers a secret, don't tell ANYONE ANYTHING about the
paper unless you absolutely have to. Advertise but don't be caught. Plan but don't be heard. If you want to use aliases that's probably a good idea.
To run a paper of a decent magnitude you will need a certain level of commitment and dedication by the staff. Beverly Underground started out with about ten committed writers but as the issues went on, some writers dropped out and we also got new ones. We also received articles from readers who were not on the beverlyunderground staff. The point is, a good underground newspaper cannot be done alone, you need other writers otherwise the paper will most likely fail. Trust me, once you get writers, it may be frustrating reaching your deadlines to print the issue - it goes to show that you need to be committed to the paper as well. Try to recruit writers, artists, web designers, reporters,
etc IN PERSON - that always works better. Preferably your friends.
A word of advice on content: more is not necessarily better - do not print crap - if you think the article will be interesting to read and/or controversial then that's a good story. Also, don't print lies (unless you indicate it as comedy or something), make sure what you say is fact because otherwise the paper gets discredited.
The hardest part in running the site is definitely getting the articles together for each issue. I've said it many times - but I will again for emphasis, if you do this you do it all the
way. Don't try starting an underground paper unless you have the
determination to see it through more than one or two issues.
